Biography
Through use of colour, graphite and simple pared-down sculptural forms, Andy D’Cruz draws on a process of refinement, ‘tuning’ and layering to expose and condense intrinsic material qualities. Rhythm and balance is sought in sculptural forms; tension and movement in 2D work. Through this refined and simple use of materials a quiet resonance is set up.
Recent work has used recorded voices, whispers and sounds in intimate audio installations. Simple rhythms, silences and words are gathered and arranged to create a resonance and intimacy similar to the sculptural and 2D work. Newer work conceals aspects of landscape to explore a relationship, meaning and connection to place. Direct experience, memory and cultural notions of place are drawn out and discovered in the quiet graphite work.
The artist is not concerned with meaning, but with the physical sense and subtle resonance created by the work; work which activates the surrounding space and invites a deeper meditative contemplation.
His work creates a sense of mystery, serenity and intimacy, inviting the viewer to quiet introspection.
